The island of Phuket in the south of Thailand is famous for the crystal waters of the Andaman Sea, endless beaches - some of which are rather good - and beautiful mountains and valleys all worth an exploratory drive.
While the southwest of Phuket – and notably the nightlife centre of Patong – buzzes with entertainment and the neon throb of nightlife, the northern part remains a tranquil escape. Here you'll discover old rubber plantations and coconut groves.
If you’re a scuba diver, Phuket has it all: warm water, good underwater visibility and a variety of corals and fish not far offshore. Or simply go snorkelling. Explore the coastal karst caves by kayak, enjoy white-water rafting or a lazy elephant safari. Kids will love the mini-golf at the Jurassic Park style Dino Park.
The Panyee Sea Gypsy Village, a floating habitat that is home to about 1,500 people, makes for an interesting side trip, as does a speedboat ride to the stunning picture-postcard islands of Phi Phi.
Championship golf courses dot Phuket making the island perfect for a golfing holiday. Try the scenic Blue Canyon Country Club courses. The energetic can trek up the Ton Sai waterfall or the Kathu Falls.
Phuket shopping centres largely around the beer-and-bars nightlife area of Patong but stalls and specialities are scattered everywhere. Sample the many open-air food markets, street stalls, local shops and upmarket brand shops dotted around the island, for anything from handicrafts, clothing and jewellery.
