There are few more charming introductions to Arabia than a visit to Muscat, the capital of Oman, flanked by the Arabian Sea and rugged mountains.
The sparkling city, with the three core districts of Muscat (the old port area), Muttrah (the main trading and residential area) and Ruwi (the commercial district), is known as “Arabia’s Jewel”, and for good reason. The city’s green lawns and trees offset the sand-coloured buildings and minarets of this fascinating desert country.
Increasingly a destination for travellers in the know, Muscat’s warm, blue waters lure divers and snorkellers. You’ll find it hard to resist the souks (markets) with their enticing Middle Eastern delights and exotic wares.
Attractive old forts, walled gateways and beautiful Islamic architecture add more charm to a city with an old-world feel but all the comforts of the new. Head to the wide beaches, or to the seafront Corniche for an evening promenade. For an easy overview of Oman’s 5,000-year history, check out the Oman Museum in the Medinat Qaboos west of Muscat.
It’s not all about the sights. There’s plenty of adventure to get the adrenaline pumping. Most tour operators offer desert camp-out excursions and “wadi-bashing” trips into the dunes. For a more tranquil day out, there are also camel rides and Omani barbeques under the stars.
Summer months are hot and humid, but winter (December to March) is warm with cool nights.

VIEW: Climb the steep steps up the restored watchtower in the Muttrah area of the city for a bird’s-eye view from the top. It’s worth the effort.
SEE The Grand Mosque, an imposing example of modern Islamic architecture. The carpet in the prayer hall, the biggest in the world, took four years to weave.
DO: Don’t miss a browse through the Muttrah souk with all the allure of a traditional Arab market and some good antique shops selling Omani and Indian artefacts.
