Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, is an appealing mix of past and present, with colonial buildings and markets offset by glittering skyscrapers and teeming malls. The twin 1,453ft Petronas Towers dominate the skyline, symbolic of the city’s economic clout.
No visit to KL is complete without some shopping, and more shopping. Later, you can enjoy, well, even more shopping. Huge malls abound, featuring every big designer brand. One of many to check out is the spacious Suria Shopping Complex.
Another newer attraction is the extensive Starhill complex with shops, art and food sections. Appropriately, Kuala Lumpur hosts an annual and highly popular shopping Mega Sale.
For the budget-conscious, there are markets galore. Trendy flea markets include Sogo’s Sunday Bazaar. Central Market, with a local feel and good prices offers local handicraft, quirky souvenirs and fabrics. Nearby, upgraded Chinatown with pre-war shophouses transforms into a bustling market after dark.
A visit to the city’s 920,000sq m Lake Gardens, just west of the central city area near the Parliament building, is well worth it. Attractions include a butterfly park, orchid garden, hibiscus garden and bird park.
Kuala Lumpur teems with nightlife – check out the Bangsar area for trendy bars and clubs. The city’s sidewalk culture is growing and restaurants and cafes spill out onto the street downtown. Do also take in local history and culture at The National Museum, built in the style of a Malay palace.
